HorrorHound Weekend 2010

Here's a recap of my entire journey to and from HorrorHound Weekend 2010 in Sharonville, Ohio.

My plan was flying from Iceland on Thursday, the 11th of November, to Boston and from there connect to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG). A couple of days before my trip, I noticed there was no way I could make it to Boston. So, I switched over to New York, JFK Airport. I asked if this would be a problem with the connecting flight with Delta since it said Boston on my standby ticket. They said most likely not since there are fewer miles from New York to Cincinnati than Boston to Cincinnati, so I wasn't cheating on paying less here. Plus, I had no problem with this when I traveled with American Airlines in March.

I woke up about 10 in the morning on Thursday and got myself ready for the flight. I bought a book at the airport to read on the trip, called Ancestor by Scott Sigler. I read it while on the airplanes and while waiting for flights, it was a good read. Everything worked like a charm, I got on the flight, flew to JFK. At the customs the man asked me where I was going, and I told him that and Linda Blair from The Exorcist was going to be there. He replied that she was scary in that one. No argument from me there. I got on the shuttle to LaGuardia, there was a flight leaving at 6 in the morning that was wide open.

I had a box of Icelandic candy with me called Draumur (dream, or dreamy if used in that context), chocolate with licorice inside (very good). I needed change for the soda machine in the terminal so I went to this coffee/bakery shop and I got the necessary change from the tip jar because she had closed the register. I thanked her by giving her a piece from the candy box, she liked it and her co-worker as well. She offered me some stuff that she was going to throw away by the end of her shift, I picked the pastry and had some of that during the night.

I waited the entire night, killed time with reading the book and taking micro-naps here and there. At 4 in the morning the ticketing opened and there I was informed that Delta had changed their rules. It HAD to say New York on the ticket, didn't matter if Boston had more miles or not. It HAD to be within the same zone, area or state. Foolishly I took a taxi to JFK right away and waited till 4 in the afternoon when Icelandair opened their ticketing to have my ticket re-issued.

The ladies at the British Airways were stumped by my predicament and offered me to sleep in a couch area reserved for first class passengers (nobody was there, so no harm). Actually, the lady was early and I didn't bother asking if she was the Icelandair employee. This took a lot longer than I thought to make this ticket, she didn't want to make any mistakes. So, I missed the last flight from JFK, and thus, had to take another taxi to LaGuardia to make the last flight around 7:30 in the evening. Needless to say, my day was a waste of time and money.

The ride from the airport and to the hotel was a good 45 minutes since the guy didn't know where it was, but thankfully we have GPS! The photo is taken after having crossed the Ohio river. I got to the hotel in Sharonville, Ohio just before midnight and sweet sleep was what the doctor ordered...after being awake for almost 2 days with only small naps here and there.

The hotel suited my needs (which are the bare minimum, the essentials: clean, shower and quiet) and I was afraid it was some sort of hell hole because there was hardly any reviews on it, plus it didn't paint a pretty picture. I chose the cheapest hotel which was still on the same road as the convention hotel, it was less than a 5 minute walk. And 5-15 minutes from fast food places, Target and the Tri-County shopping mall. Very convenient.

As I walked into the convention hotel I met a guy which I saw at the Chicago Flashback Weekend in 2009, we had planned on having a beer at the after-party that evening. But it was still quite a coincidence to meet him straight away since we really had no means of communication outside of me just having the computer in the hotel lobby where I was staying.

Anyway, my first stop were a trio of nice ladies which have one thing in common, of being associated with the Stepfather films. I already had met Meg Foster in Texas last March, she remembered me but obviously forgot the name. She was so happy to see me again and was a total sweetheart. She told me to come back later and get something extra before I left.

My next stop was Caroline Williams who was with Meg Foster in Stepfather II. She was nice as well. Since I had my Icelandic candy box with me, I decided to just share it with any celebrities that I came across. Caroline said it was wild, hadn't tasted anything like it. I guess licorice isn't used much in American candy. It's very common in Iceland and Denmark for instance.

Here are the autographs from Meg and Caroline on my Stepfather II DVD.

Jill Schoelen was next, she was nice as well. I was surprised to see she had a music CD at her desk, apparently she's doing this jazz fusion thing, I'm curious alright, even though it's not my cup of tea. Jill accepted to try the candy at a later time and told me later she liked it. I let Meg Foster test the Icelandic candy and she liked it as well. Caroline told her she must try it, it was that good.

Here Jill's autograph on my Stepfather DVD.

Across the three ladies, were the nice guys from the film distribution company Synapse films which released Stepfather II on DVD (plus Brain Damage and Maniac Cop and many more). These two guys, Jerry Chandler and Don May Jr. are the men behind Synapse. Jerry handling the business side of things while Don deals with the technical aspects of the DVDs they're releasing. I had a nice chat with Jerry and found myself stopping by their table throughout those two days I was at the convention. I complimented them on the Stepfather II DVD, the bonus material really makes you appreciate the film much more. I grabbed Maniac Cop on the spot, it's been a long time since I saw it. It looked like a good package and I want to refresh my memory, is that cop really that much of a maniac? Plus, Bruce Campbell is in it. It's a keeper. Jerry liked the candy and took one for his daughter to have later.

My next victim was Julian Sands. I had already met him at Texas Frightmare Weekend in March. This time I had something for him to sign, my Naked Lunch DVD. I reminded him of the fact I was there in Texas and I think he remembered me. I gave him candy and he said it was good.

As there was a long line for Malcolm McDowell, who was next to Julian Sands, I decided to look around some more. And I stumbled onto Richard Band's table and I gazed at the CDs he had to offer. So many to choose from, and I could only really get one, which enabled me to get it autographed and a photo with him (so, it's a pretty good deal). It had to be Re-Animator, but there were 3 versions to choose from. I asked Richard which one I should go with, as I wanted as much of the score as possible. He pointed out the fact that the interview which is on one of the CDs is available at his website. There are differences, but he said the one I went with was the most complete and had choice cuts from Ghoulies as well. I chatted with him and it was a pleasant chat. I told him about how I was against the likeness of Psycho was used in the soundtrack when I saw it first on VHS when I was younger. But as I developed my music taste, I was drawn to electronic music more and more. And I just love the drums in Re-Animator, so over the top and fun. It was always meant to be quirky and fun. I also gave him candy but he opted to eat it later.

A little later the line wasn't so big at Malcolm McDowell's table, it felt like now or never. I had my Blue Thunder Special Edition DVD signed, and he seemed to approve of my choice. Sounded like it might have one of a few Blue Thunder's he signed, then again, maybe he does that to everybody. I offered him some candy. He asked me what it was and asked Julian Sands if he had tried it. Julian Sands told him it was good, so Malcolm tried it. Malcolm said it was delicious. Yes, Iceland makes damn good candy, who would have thunk it!

UPDATE: I waited with this since I didn't want to spoil the surprise. I borrowed my friend's A Clockwork Orange DVD and said I wanted to see it again. That was just a few days before I went to the US. I decided to have the DVD signed and put it with my Christmas gift to him. He told me it was quite a surprise. He had even been wondering where that DVD was and even though he had read this very blog, he didn't connect the possibility of me having the DVD signed by Malcolm McDowell.

I took a break, it was probably around 1 PM, I decided to have something to eat since I hadn't eaten anything this morning. Burger King was my choice, I did go there in the morning but they only serve breakfast stuff in the morning. I expect a burger when I go to Burger King, jeez. I went back to the convention so I could see the Re-Animator Q&A session, I was a bit late thus I was in the back, although I had a gold pass, I didn't want to intrude since the show had started. It was a lot of fun and plenty of laughs, I'm sure a video will pop up on youtube and I'll put up a link to it when that happens, because I didn't hear everything.

After the Q&A, I noticed only a couple of people were in line for Linda Blair. She had taken a break, I figured it wouldn't be long. And it was probably only 15-20 mins at most and it was worth it, since the line this morning went almost out of the hotel, it was in the lobby. I didn't want to take up much time so I wasn't very chatty, plus I just don't know much or seen her other work. Apparently she's very into saving dogs and gave me papers about her charity organization to help and adopt dogs. She seemed nice.

UPDATE: Another surprise I didn't want to spoil. I decided to have something signed by Linda Blair for my good friend Laura. Laura and her husband, Frank, do a podcast called Spooktalkular and it was sort of a plan to meet them but there were complications. I had a small Exorcist poster signed and put it with a Icelandic folklore CD as a Christmas gift. Boy, was she surprised. If you enjoy horror and the paranormal, please check out Spooktalkular.

It was around afternoon now, and I noticed that the line which were for Jeffrey Combs and Danielle Harris was nowhere to be seen. So I was able to just get to Jeffrey Combs right away. He was a nice guy, and I regret not asking him about stuff or complimenting him on his role in The Frighteners and one time role in CSI. They really don't make the artwork easy for people to sign them. There are so many chemicals, gadgets and flasks on the Re-Animator cover, it was really hard to decide where to have it signed and who to sign it. As it happened, Barbara Crampton didn't make the convention. So, that made it easy, it would be only Jeffrey Combs and Bruce Abbott who would get the honor, besides I was trying to be on a budget (and I had way more signed this time around than both Chicago and Texas conventions combined, I think). Jeffrey Combs loved the candy.

Bruce Abbott was at the next table and he was very nice and friendly. He had no trouble finding a spot on the DVD cover, he told me he had done this before. No way! He spotted I had The Exorcist with me, and he told me he saw the film when he was 19 and it scared the hell out of him. I asked if he heard anything about Dark Justice coming on DVD as I was a fan of that show. He said he had heard nothing and said it was unlikely it would come out. It was a really cool show, I want to see it again, I'm not sure if I saw the entire series or if all the seasons were shown here in Iceland. Jeffrey Combs snapped a photo of us and it was good, I guess he re-animated that photo. Bruce Abbott also liked the candy and pretty much everyone mentioned the fact it had salt in it (the licorice is the likely culprit) and that never had occurred to me since I'm familiar with licorice. It's rather exotic, I guess, to Americans.

I next stopped at Danielle Harris' table. Since I haven't seen any of her films except The Last Boy Scout, I brought that flick with me. I said she was very fun in that one, even though she had a potty mouth. She was nice and still as cute as when she was a kid. Somehow, I managed to delete the photo that was taken of me and Danielle. I guess I was deleting multiple photos next to that one and accidentally deleted it. Very strange, but I don't lament it.

Since I was here and I want to try to make the most of my trip, I said hi to other people. It's okay to say hi even if you don't intend to have anything signed, my budget ran out and I had the autographs I came there for.

I said hi to Peter Kent, who was in Re-Animator and he was Arnold Schwarzenegger's stunt double in pretty much all of his film, if not all. He was a nice guy and liked the Icelandic candy as well. Peter Kent told this funny story at the Q&A, he was with Arnold and his buddies and went to see Re-Animator. They were in front of the screen and smoking cigars. And close to the end, (I think it was Arnold, rather than some of his body builder buddies) Peter looks at Arnold and his face is sort of pale and green. Arnold said it was a disgusting film and walked off, I think. Just hearing that with Arnold's accent is pretty funny. When I told Peter Kent I was from Iceland he told me he met an Icelandic stripper in Sweden, or something, and she was wild. Plus, he remembered her name and his pronunciation wasn't half bad.

On the next table was George P. Wilbur, who was Michael Myers in Halloween 4 and 6. He's a stunt man, and has been in loads of movies. Apparently he did stunts in Re-Animator as well. I said hi to him since he wasn't getting much attention. Nice guy. He told me he's retired from movies. Like always, the candy was well received.

I did say a quick hi to Dean Cameron (from Bad Dreams and Men at Work) and Jennifer Rubin from (Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Bad Dreams). Funny how there were these mini-reunions when you saw these connections all over the place.

It was dinner time, so I took off and ate at Pizza Hut Express/Taco Bell. I had some pizza and bread sticks. It was just okay, I guess I'm not a fan of the pepperoni in the US, there was something off. But it could have been a lot worse.

I went to the after party and it was at the Coco Keys water resort and it was hot as hell in there. It was a strange location for horror fans to have a ball, for some reason the place reminded me of Venice Beach in Los Angeles, California. Must be the yellow color of the walls plus there was this fake balcony over the entrance to the swimming pool area. I met my buddy and we drank a beer or two. His wife and her sister persuaded me to take a swim. I persisted but resistance was futile. She drives a hard bargain. I managed to enjoy about 10-15 minutes in the water. There was this big water slide which consisted of tubes inside walls of the place so you were in pitch black for most of the slide. It was worth it for that reason only. I don't know how many years ago last time I went swimming, probably when I had to attend swimming in secondary school/high school (or whatever you call it that comes after elementary school). The thing with us Icelanders, when we decide to drink and paint the town red we stay up really late. Often people drink at home and go downtown well after 1 AM and stay until when the bars closes at 5-6 AM. So, of course everything was over at 1 AM and everything closed at 2 AM. While I respect this custom to drink early and go to sleep early, makes sense, I could have stayed up later and drink some more (since I didn't drink much at the party). At the party I chatted to some two nice ladies, Jennifer and Barbara. I'm usually terrible remembering names but these I could remember. As I had bought Back to the Future earlier that day, it was on my mind that Marty McFly's girl was named Jennifer. And who can't remember that "they're coming to get you, Barbara. Look! Here comes one of them now!"? And on my way out of the party, I stopped to look at this guy's T-shirt, it was a Human Centipede T-shirt. With the psycho doctor on the front with the demonstration sketch on the back. Plus, there was this funny blurb in a balloon on the front, ASS TO MOUTH! I chatted to that fella, his name was Otis. See, another name I remember, how about that? The axe in The Frailty had the name Otis carved on it plus the elevator brand. And I kept thinking of Clerks II, "you never go ass to mouth!".

I used Sunday morning buying some Christmas presents at Target. Then it was time to check the convention and say hi to some more people, I had to make the most of my trip. There was this Ghostbusters room which I sort of ignored on Saturday. I decided to look around in a bit more detail than before. Lots of gadgets from the films or maybe they were replicas, could have fooled me. I said hi to Billy Bryan and Mark Bryan Wilson, they both worked on Ghostbusters. I had a nice chat with Billy. He asked me if I had seen Let the Right One In, I unfortunately haven't seen it yet. But I'm aware of this Swedish vampire flick which has been remade as Let Me In (which is the title of the book the films are based on). He told me how much of a mistake it was seeing the English dubbed version of Let the Right One In. I told him I saw this subtitle snafu where a lot of things where simplified or simply dropped. He had some lines from different languages on his phone. I let him record me saying The Ghostbusters in Icelandic and "my work is hard but somebody has to do it" as well in Icelandic. I sort of regret not having said Ghostbusters, in Icelandic. Since the films don't use the definite article, but then again, there are only one ghostbusters, therefore it really should be okay. He played the "my work is hard" line in African, which was filled with click and pops. He noticed the salt in the candy and he asked me about it. And true enough, salt, was in the ingredients. And it's spelled "salt" in Icelandic as well. He also showed me a video of their version of the giant French puppet princess that toured Iceland and other countries a few years ago. I told him that I saw it by chance while working, me and a co-worker had to drive to the capital and we saw a car with a knife stuck through the whole body of the car. We had seen a picture of it earlier and were contemplating if it was a photo-shopped image. Then we saw it for real. Billy was very nice and fun to talk to. I'm glad I decided to check them out, it was Ghostbusters, so I had to, right?

I stopped once again by the Synapse's table and gave into buying yet another title. The cover art was just too cool to resist, plus it looked like a sweet package. The film I bought is called Blue Sunshine, I had never heard of it before. But it has an interesting plot and Jerry recommended it, so I was sold.

There was not a lot going on, people were packing their stuff pretty much the whole day. I was just going through the rooms and checking in on the people. Stopped by Jeffrey Combs and Bruce Abbott again and gave Bruce another candy. Bruce told me that Jeffrey was raving about those things, so naturally I gave him another one as well. They were the only ones who got a "re-fill".

I said hi and chatted to Chris Carnel, he was
a stunt double and the stunt/fight coordinator on The Crazies (the recent remake). He was a fun guy to talk to. I told him I hadn't seen the film but wanted to since I thought it was a very welcome update. He took his laptop and showed me b-roll footage of this car stunt he did in the film. He's driving on a road and the car then does a flip and crashes off the road. It looks like nobody is around and when the stunt is over, people come all over the place and seeing if he's alright. The stunt was a success and he showed me this one shot, which was thankfully used in the film, where the camera is in front of the car and the car flips over the camera after one of the rolls. Some debris almost hit the camera if I remember correctly, or was it the car itself that was skidding close to the camera? I'll know for sure when I see the film, as I bought it at Target later that day. Sadly, he told me he's half as busy as he used to be since the economy went down the tubes all over the world. When I got home I saw he's been in the stunt business for a long time and saw that he did one of my fondly remembered cop show, High Incident. Chris told me through Facebook I was probably the only one who remembers that show. And he was very lucky, he got the last candy and he loved it.

Next to Chris was Brett Wagner who was also in The Crazies. And Brett is Norwegian, I didn't know that. I'm pretty sure it's not Norwegian what the man in The Thing mutters in the beginning of the film. And I can assure you, it's not Icelandic nor do many of the players have Icelandic names in The Mighty Ducks.

I sort of made an ass of myself, when I was gonna spend my last 20 bucks on an autograph. I was in front of Kathleen Kinmont's table and I had the first Austin Powers film with me. Now, I had confused her with Fabiana Udenio, who didn't make it to the convention due to being snowed in at an airport. Thankfully, Kathleen was a good sport and told me she was not in that one. It's a good sign when actors DO know in what movies they weren't in and which ones they were in.

I said a quick hello to Erik Preston, who was young Michael Myers in Halloween 4, and I'm a really bad fan since I haven't seen hardly any of the Halloween sequels outside of the latest ones. He was a good sport and thankfully he had a good time at the convention.

I swung by Peter Kent's table again, and he gave me this VHS tape of The Occultist. Someone had given him it at the convention. It was a special prize, the most farthest traveled for this convention prize. Peter signed the tape and George P. Wilbur was at the next table and he said he would sign it as well and I took him up on it. The funny thing, they weren't in this film. What a collector's item, and THIS IS The Collector's Edition of The Occultist on VHS. I wonder how much money I could rake with this on eBay. I'll never find out though, this baby in never leaving my side.

On my way out, I stopped by the three ladies and said goodbye. As promised, Meg Foster let me have another picture signed. We chatted for a bit as she was packing up her things, she had to leave soon after the convention was over. Will the third time be a charm? Only time will tell.

I bought some horror DVDs at Target and ate dinner at McDonald's. I returned to my hotel and was channel surfing. Watched a bit of Mythbusters and later I stumbled onto The Walking Dead. AMC were having a marathon and I sadly missed most of the first episode. I saw the last 5 minutes or so, I did keep watching and saw episode two and three. And for some reason episode three was repeated after that. There are three more episodes that completes season one. I'll be keeping my eye on this series.

Monday, time to go back to JFK and be on my way home. There were no hassles this time around. Expensive 35 minute taxi ride, a little more than an hour flight and I was at JFK before 3 PM. It was waiting time once again, I finished that Ancestor book and quite enjoyed it, could make a good film with the right budget and I could see how those Ancestors looked like, my imagination is rubbish. I got home safe and sound Tuesday morning in Iceland.

I'm sure I'll attend other conventions but which one will be next and when it's hard to say. It will be 2011 for sure though. It was a fun trip, safe for that Friday fiasco. Had some lovely chats with lots of people and nice weather to boot. I guess I could have gotten more out this trip, but I'm getting there. I guess the shy Icelander is coming out of his igloo a little bit. Just kidding, we live in shells...I mean, houses. We do have cars and bubble gum...just don't be out of bubble gum when I come walking with a shotgun.

Cheers from Iceland!

Partytime Years Later

Millennium fan music video number forty. I did this video to celebrate Halloween with all the nice people over at the TIWWA forums.

All the footage is taken from Thirteen Years Later..., episode five from season three of Millennium. The track is called Partytime (Zombie Version) by 45 Grave. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's about 76 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

MacGyver & Millennium

Millennium fan music video number thirty-nine. I was inspired by all the great mashup videos I've seen on YouTube, where vidders take music from a TV show and put it against another show and mimic the style of the original show.

I had great fun with this one, it took me some time gathering all those little bits here and there. I wanted to focus on season one and two of Millennium with a few shots from season three. I used the season one version of the MacGyver theme song but used the cut template from the second season when Dana Elcar started getting main title credit. It might be a frame off here and there but it's supposed to be cut at the same time as the season two opening titles of MacGyver.

I did alter some shots, either sped up or slowed down a few shots. And I changed the color in a few shots either to darken or lighten the picture.

Footage is taken from various episodes from all three seasons of Millennium. The track is the theme song for the TV series MacGyver (taken from season one) by Randy Edelman. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's about 28 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

The End of Lara Means as We Know It

Millennium fan music video number thirty-eight. I did this video to celebrate the 42nd birthday of Kristen Cloke with all the nice people over at the TIWWA forums.

All the footage is taken from almost every episode Lara Means appeared in throughout season two of Millennium plus some disaster footage from season three. The track is called The End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) by R.E.M. I titled the video: Lara Means is Paranoid. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's about 74 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

Peter Watts

Millennium fan music video number thirty-seven. It was time to give the character Peter Watts some much needed love. I decided to just use Season Two footage since I was lazy plus it's the season where Watts is the most developed and the song I chose was rather short.

All the footage is taken from a few episodes Peter Watts appeared in throughout season two of Millennium as well as the last episode of the series. The track is called A Warm Place by Nine Inch Nails. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's about 61 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

Blind from Darkness

Millennium fan music video number thirty-six. I was inspired by Jason D. Morris' "Beach Ball of Pain" fan video, plus I've always wanted to do a video with just Frank Black's visions. And that video did give me that push. It took some time to find all the visions and know which ones to use and where to put them.

Footage is taken from various episodes from all three seasons of Millennium. The track is called Heresy (Blind) by Nine Inch Nails. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's about 113 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

70 Years of Lance Henriksen

Millennium fan music video number thirty-five. I did this video to celebrate the 70th birthday of Lance Henriksen with all the nice people over at the TIWWA forums.

If you like the music track in this music video, please check out Cindi's myspace page and garageband page for more of her fantastic music.

The track is called Melancholy by /skerj/. Enjoy!

Forcing the Easter

Millennium fan music video number thirty-four. I did this video to celebrate Easter with all the nice people over at the TIWWA forums.

Very hard video to do, to try to shorten the scenes to the bare essentials to know what is happening and to make sense.

All the footage is taken from Forcing the End, episode fifteenth from season three of Millennium. The track is called Leaving Hope by Nine Inch Nails. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's about 127 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

Darwin's Eye Too

Millennium fan music video number thirty-three. I did this video to celebrate Easter with all the nice people over at the TIWWA forums. Obviously, I already had done a video for this episode, so I had to focus on the A-story instead of the B-story I did in the previous one.

As always, I love cutting to the beat of a song plus I managed to link some visuals to the lyrics somewhat.

All the footage is taken from Darwin's Eye, episode seventeen from season three of Millennium. The track is called Eye by Smashing Pumpkins. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's about 146 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

TIWWA Easter Egg

Millennium fan music video number thirty-two. I did this video to celebrate Easter with all the nice people over at the TIWWA forums. This was used as a hidden Easter egg.

All the footage is taken from The Sound of Snow, episode twelve from season three of Millennium. Audio was taken from Beware of the Dog and The Curse of Frank Black, episode two and six from season two of Millennium. The tracks are called Peter Cottontail by Gene Autry; and As Long as I'm Singing by Bobby Darin. Enjoy!

Rip Thy Kingdom

Millennium fan music video number thirty-one. This is the last video I made for backtofrankblack.com, however I did share a few videos which I did for millennium-thisiswhoweare.net.

It was a fun ride making videos for backtofrankblack when it was in full blossom. It was exhausting but rewarding, the challenge of doing a video a week. Sometimes I was ahead and sometimes I fell behind but I always delivered (except when I went to the Flashback Weekend horror convention in Chicago). I just wanted to see if I could do a music video and then it was just to see how many videos could I make before I hit the music wall. I never did it for the recognition, I did it for the enjoyment of others (but positive feedback was always appreciated) plus I wanted to encourage people to let them be heard.

There was a time when BTFB was flying to the moon, not because it's easy but because it's hard. Now with staff changes, it's flying to the sun and they've burned all bridges. I do appreciate getting these gold nuggets on those Millennium Group Sessions podcasts from the cast and crew of Millennium, but it's hard to support them when you know they act like 8 years old behind people's back. I could say some foul things about the guys running the site now, but I won't. Because I'm not in the hurting game. I really should have listened to the wisdom of The X-Files to trust no one and that the truth is out there.

All the footage is taken from Kingdom Come, episode six from season one of Millennium. The track is called Rip by Gary Numan. I titled the video: Rip Thy Kingdom. Enjoy!

Morgan & Wong

Millennium fan music video number thirty. Here's a promo I did for Morgan & Wong week over at backtofrankblack.com. I'm very proud of what I managed to do with what was supposed to be only a 30 seconds long. But I soon realized that was very hard to do, plus I wanted it to be somewhat epic, so I opted to focus on the comet which was one of Morgan & Wong's creation throughout the second season.

All the footage is taken from The Beginning and the End; and The Time is Now, episode one and twenty-three from season two of Millennium. The track is called Intro from "Also sprach Zarathustra" (Strauss) by John Williams and Boston Pops Orchestra. I titled the video: Avatar on the Loose. Enjoy!

Into the Millennium

Millennium fan music video number twenty-nine, or should I say X-Files fan music video? Yes, I made a music video from the infamous X-Files/Millennium crossover episode.

All the footage is taken from Millennium, episode four from season seven of X-Files. The track is called Into the Woods by Paw. I titled the video: Into the Millennium. Enjoy!

Avatar on the Loose

Millennium fan music video number twenty-eight. I wanted to be on the Avatar bandwagon, so I made a tribute to Avatar...the REAL Avatar, mind you, the biggest badass Frank Black has faced in his career.

Avatar is here, get off the Internet, it's not safe!

All the footage is taken from The Mikado, episode thirteen from season two of Millennium. The track is called Killer on the Loose by Thin Lizzy. I titled the video: Avatar on the Loose. Enjoy!

The Beginning and the End of Your White Halo

Millennium fan music video number twenty-seven. I finally was able to use an actual Gary Numan song, I was feeling guilty of only been using cover version. I managed to fit the lyrics to the action by making it reflect on whoever is on screen (Frank Black, Peter Watts or Jordan Black).

All the footage is taken from The Beginning and the End, episode one from season two of Millennium. The track is called Halo by Gary Numan . I titled the video: The Beginning and the End of Your White Halo. Enjoy!

Frank Black Celebration

Millennium fan music video number twenty-six. For a long time this song was looming over me, I knew I was going to use this song focusing on Frank Black. When I actually got around to do it, it was December and might as well use it to celebrate the new year since I also used footage from the X-Files episode "Millennium".

I was really proud of having Frank Black blinking and hitting a door to the beat of this song (and no, I didn't cheat like they did on the show, they showed the same action from two viewpoints to make it longer).

Footage is taken from various episodes from all three seasons of Millennium and the X-Files/Millennium crossover episode "Millennium", episode four from season seven of X-Files. The track is called Black Celebration by Depeche Mode. I titled the video: Frank Black Celebration. Enjoy!

Higher Ego

Millennium fan music video number twenty-five. It was hard to find a track for this episode but I managed to find just the right one at the last moment. It was fun to see that even Sonny's blows matched the beat of the song. I noticed again how they edited the show. I managed to extend this one master shot of the two women on the bed by linking all of them together (and I noticed they used the same material twice in that motel room scene).

All the footage is taken from In Arcadia Ego, episode eighteen from season two of Millennium. The track is called Higher Lover by Depeche Mode. I titled the video: Higher Ego. Enjoy!

A Single Shriekback

Millennium fan music video number twenty-four. Again, nothing much to say about this video. Just that I felt this track had a very spiritual vibe that matched this episode quite well.

All the footage is taken from A Single Blade of Grass, episode five from season two of Millennium. The track is called Coelocanth by Shriekback. I titled the video: A Single Shriekback. Enjoy!

Midnight of a Merry Little Christmas

Millennium fan music video number twenty-three. It was time for a Christmas music video and I searched high and low within my family's Christmas compilations. And I found this track which I felt was perfect for our favorite Millennium Christmas episode, Midnight of the Century.

I managed to link the lyrics to the action somewhat and that was very fun to do.

All the footage is taken from Midnight of the Century, episode ten from season two of Millennium. The track is called Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Bing Crosby. I titled the video: Midnight of a Merry Little Christmas. Enjoy!

Amber Skull and Bones

Millennium fan music video number twenty-two. There's nothing much to say about this video other than I wanted to feature some of my good music friends I've met (some even in person) in the past through myspace. And this episode and this track were perfect for each other.

If you like the music track in this music video, please check out Cindi's myspace page and garageband page for more of her fantastic music.

All the footage is taken from Skull and Bones, episode six from season three of Millennium. The track is called Amber Lights by /skerj/. I titled the video: Amber Skull and Bones. Enjoy!

Owls and Roosters, It's Still Midnight

Millennium fan music video number twenty-one. This is one video that needed to be epic. This one has a history. I gave a friend of mine a CD (In Silico by Pendulum) and heard the first track and asked to borrow the CD (and gave it back the very next day). I put it on my iShuffle and listened to the album many times for a few weeks. When I heard the beginning of the fifth track, I thought of the beginning of Owls. The music had this Eastern quality or whatever it was, and later in the track it came apparent in my mind that it would be perfect for the shootout in the beginning of Roosters.

It was quite a task to shrink the shootout in the beginning of Owls, I cut it in half. Everything you see in the video is intended, worked out by trial and error or purely accidental. I didn't need to make one cut in the shootout scene with Frank Black, I just decided to cut straight to it when the music went ballistic. Other than that, it was untouched. Sometimes, you don't need to cut...which is nice.

All the footage is taken from Roosters and Owls, episode fifteen and sixteen from season two of Millennium. The track is called Midnight Runner by Pendulum. I titled the video: Owls & Roosters, It's Still Midnight. Enjoy!

Guilty Weeds

This is the twentieth Millennium fan music video I made. I always planned on using this track, another track from the band Gravity Kills. And Weeds was the perfect episode to go along to since it was about judgment being passed on people living in a guarded community. I noticed something when editing the video. The shot of Frank Black ducking behind that pole, in the episode you see him do that twice, and it's the same shot. So, I managed to make a seamless transition to make the shot longer. It was fun combining two sequences with the killer and his victims and make it as one. And I also kept the identity of the killer a secret.

All the footage is taken from Weeds, episode eleven from season one of Millennium. The track is called Guilty by Gravity Kills. I titled the video: Guilty Weeds. Enjoy!

Hey Man, Nice Line

Here's my nineteenth Millennium fan music video I made. I made a promise to Viivi, who co-runs a fan site dedicated to the band Filter, to use a song by Filter in one of my future videos. I did many videos after the initial request but had a hard time finding an episode which fit the bill. Then it just hit me, I could connect it with that episode. And the rest was history. It was fun connecting the flashback scene with the dream sequence to make a seamless sequence.

All the footage is taken from The Thin White Line, episode fourteen from season one of Millennium.
The track is called Hey Man, Nice Shot by Filter. I titled the video: Hey Man, Nice Line. Enjoy!

Yaponchik

Here's my eighteenth Millennium fan music video I made. I made a short film with my friend back in 2000 or so. In that short film we used this track and naturally when I thought of Marantha, this song popped up in my head. It turned out well. One fun mixture of scenes, I grabbed a close up of the shotgun barrel from another scene, and it matched the percussion hit in the music.

All the footage is taken from Marantha, episode twenty one from season one of Millennium.
The track is called Volga Boat Song by Soviet Army Chorus & Band. I titled the video: Yaponchik. Enjoy!

The Ghosts of Frank Black

Here's my seventeenth Millennium fan music video I made. It was time for Halloween, so this was a no-brainer. One of the unwritten rules of my music videos was to never use a TV or film score but rules are meant to be bent or broken. When you think of Halloween you automatically think of John Carpenter's Halloween. So, of course I had to incorporate that somehow into the video. Out of that, the Happy Halloween intro was born. I already had the other song in my head for this episode along with how I should cut it at various places. This video was a hassle to make as the programs I was using weren't cooperating with me but as always, I preserved.

All the footage is taken from The Curse of Frank Black, episode six from season two of Millennium.
The tracks I used are Halloween by Celldweller (John Carpenter cover) and Ghosts by Japan. I titled the video: The Ghosts of Frank Black. Enjoy!

We Have Roedecker

Here's my sixteenth Millennium fan music video I made. It was time to honor a certain computer guru, Brian Roedecker. I had to combine lots of computer footage and shots of Roedecker to make this happen, plus find a good song to put this into perspective. Another Gary Numan cover song was chosen for this task. We see Peter Watts and Frank Black have technical problems and Roedecker is there to fix them.

All the footage is taken from every episode Brian Roedecker appeared in throughout season two of Millennium. The track is called We Have a Technical by Damon Albarn & Matt Sharp and it's a Gary Numan cover. I titled the video: We Have Roedecker. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places, I've tried uploading the video three times with different settings and the result is always the same. One Hour Doomsday Defense

Here's my fifteenth Millennium fan music video I made. As this was an odd episode, it needed an oddball music track. I found one but it was a short one, I think I still did okay with this one. Stay tuned after the credits for Rocket McGrane!

All the footage is taken from Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense, episode nine from season two of Millennium.
The track is called One Hour Empire by Broadcast. I titled the video: One Hour Doomsday Defense. Enjoy!

Ride of the Luminary

Here's my fourteenth Millennium fan music video I made. This was a tricky video to make, as I had computer problems when making this video and it affected a few videos after that. But I made it work after much hardship. It was my intention from the start to focus on Frank's journey in the wilderness and delete anything else from it. I cut around Peter Watts in the end to separate that part of the episode from the video. I was always going to use a Tangerine Dream track, but finally found one that wasn't too epic although it was long enough. I just had enough footage to make the guitar solo signify the aurora borealis. I tried as well to make a cool transition linking four shots together. It works well but still doesn't live to up what I tried to do. I had a night time shot of the mountain, stars shot, moon shot and a shot of the flashlight going out. I did darken the image a bit to make it more seamless this time around. And as I want Frank Black to look the best, I didn't show the scene where they drop into the river. Plus, I had enough material to work with anyway.

All the footage is taken from Luminary, episode twelve from season two of Millennium.
The track is called Ride on the Ray by Tangerine Dream. I titled the video: Ride of the Luminary. Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's a little bit over 110 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

Heartbeat

Here's my thirteenth Millennium fan music video I made. Since it was evident that Millennium was inspired by the novels of Thomas Harris which introduced us to the character of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, I decided to pay my homage to the obvious connection between Red Dragon and the final two episodes of Millennium. I really admire the Michael Mann film, Manhunter, which is based upon the book Red Dragon. So, I tried my very best to tie the two together. I used a song from the soundtrack of Manhunter and cut to the lyrics, so it would make as much sense to the viewer. I wanted to heighten the connection between the "driller killer" and Frank Black. All these cuts are intentional (although some were discovered on the fly, like Frank Black tripping on the stairs), that you see in the video. And I even corrected something they did in the episode. Frank Black pushes an open door even more ajar and later there's a point of view shot of the bedroom where you can clearly see the door in its original position. Plus, I noticed something else about how they did things on Millennium. There's a close up shot of Frank Black looking at the kitchen sink, they use the very same shot (although they use different pieces, since they lined up perfectly when I played them back to back) twice; the first shot is when he looks at it the first time and they come back to the crime scene again when the curtains were closed so everything was dark. They tinted that same shot so it would match with everything else in that second visit.

All the footage is taken from Via Dolorosa and Goodbye to All That, episode twenty one and twenty two from season three of Millennium.
The track is called Heartbeat by Red 7. I titled the video: Heartbeat (it was really hard to come up with anything). Enjoy!

NOTE: The video looks a bit dodgy in a couple of places. Thus, I'm offering a download of the video in MPEG-4 format. It's a about 75 MB in size. The link might become a dud in the future if people don't download it within a certain time limit.

Here is the Yellow House

Here's my twelfth Millennium fan music video I made. When I heard this track, Here is the House, by Depeche Mode I knew I had to make a video which displayed the yellow house. This video was a bit of a rush job, as I didn't want to look for more shots of the yellow house in other episodes. I used episode that I had already on my computer ready to use. I wanted to show both the good and bad times that happened under the roof of the yellow house. It's amazing how quickly the tone changes by the end of the track so there was only one scene that would go with it. The clock is ticking for Frank Black, is the yellow house a safe haven for him anymore?

All the footage is taken from the first four episodes (Pilot, Gehenna, Dead Letters and The Judge) from season one of Millennium. The track is called Here is the House by Depeche Mode. I titled the video: Here is the Yellow House. Enjoy!

As Strong as Eye Am

Here's my eleventh Millennium fan music video I made. It was time to devote a video to Emma Hollis. And Darwin's Eye was the perfect episode to use, where her father is introduced. I focused just on the B-story for this video. It was fun to make this video, to cut to the beat. The music track is taken from the soundtrack of the film Manhunter, directed by Michael Mann.

All the footage is taken from Darwin's Eye, episode seventeen from season three of Millennium. The track is called As Strong as I am by Prime Movers. I titled the video: As Strong as Eye Am. Enjoy!

Lara Means is Paranoid

Here's my tenth Millennium fan music video I made. As I pondered about what kind of track Lara Means montage/character video should have, words like "cool" and "hip" came to mind. The song I Think I'm Paranoid by Garbage fit the bill nicely, plus I could anchor it around Lara Means' meltdown in The Time is Now. I did however want to present her in a nice way, thus I tried to choose shots that didn't make her look too bad (like in that meltdown scene). I didn't want to see when the paramedics came and see her bawling all over the place, it was a real low-point for the character and you felt sorry for her.

All the footage is taken from almost every episode Lara Means appeared in throughout season two of Millennium. The track is called I Think I'm Paranoid by Garbage. I titled the video: Lara Means is Paranoid. Enjoy!

Millennium - Pilot

Here's a reproduction of a review I did at my other blog at TIWWA.

We all know Millennium like the palm of our hand, so I won't be doing an introduction for this review.

The Pilot episode of Millennium is considered to be groundbreaking in pushing the envelope of what could be shown on prime time. On second viewing you see it's all in your head. There's no violence in this episode, only violence implied through victims both dead and alive. It's not as graphic as you would think and it's never gratuitous.

The show literally asks us if we like the show, if we like the naked flesh and the flow of blood. The stripper, Wednesday, asks the Frenchman during a private session if this is what he wants and he should tell her what he wants. We're put into the Frenchman's point of view. She might as well be asking us when she says "is this what you want? Tell me what you want." Some could not keep their eyes off the screen, others objected with letters of disgust which told us who they are. We're all flesh and blood, why shouldn't we want that? After all, this is who we are, literally.

One of my favorite bands is used to good effect in this episode, while not by far my favorite song, it's handled brilliantly throughout the episode. The Nine Inch Nails' song Piggy was born for Millennium.

Bletch tells Frank Black that the "homicide rate's at a record low, only 34 last year." That doesn't sound like the impending doom of the apocalypse to me. Lucky for us that Frank is working for the Millennium Group traveling across USA, and not the Seattle homicide division or there hardly would be a show on our hands. At least, not the killer of the week, that's for sure.

On the commentary track, Chris Carter mentions that the autopsy room (and presumably the homicide office) were shot on stage. Superb production design, I always thought it was shot on location. It looks real to me, thanks to Gary Wissner who was also the art director on the film Se7en. So, no wonder all the comparisons to that film and Millennium, not to mention that Carter himself cites it as an influence.

Frank is "the man with the X-ray eyes" according to the coroner, and why shouldn't we assume the same. He knew details that were left out of the paper, and he opted not to see the victim. But all the same, could be a "lucky guesser" as Bletch thinks.

Tuesday, another stripper, tells Frank "the clientele here isn't exactly the picture of moral rectitude". There are some words here that go over the nickel vocabulary line. Seriously, not like I know any strippers but this one is not your average stripper. That's not what I expect a stripper to say, is it me or does The Ruby Tip has the most intelligent strippers than any strip joint? Plus, the victim was clean, no drugs. (I know, silly to think like this, but TV has portrayed strippers like this over and over again, but then Chris Carter changes things around which is refreshing.) Anyway, I had to go to webster.com to get the definition to be absolutely sure what rectitude exactly meant, and the definitions are as follows:

1 : the quality or state of being straight
2 : moral integrity : righteousness
3 : the quality or state of being correct in judgment or procedure

It's interesting if you interpret this with the first definition as Frank Black says the Frenchman is "very confused" about his sexuality.

Another thing, she says men don't need a reason to do harm. Wrong, there's a reason for everything, a reason behind every action.

I'm examining the dialog, not her situation as stripper. I'm not trying to offend anyone here.

When Frank is driving and dropping Bletch off in his car, it's interesting that the director, David Nutter, chose these kinds of shots. These shots echo the style of Homicide: Life on the Street, another cop show which never made things pretty for the viewer. We're inside the car with them, in the backseat, a dark dormant passenger. We're on a ride which we can't leave; we can close our eyes but the horror is still there. That's about all what we can do when watching Millennium.

There was one word that stuck out for me that Peter Watts said to Frank. He said the killer knew what he was doing and doing it "with real sangfroid, judging by his tidy cleanup". According to webster.com "sangfroid implies great coolness and steadiness under strain". "Extraneous stressor" is a common profiler/medical talk, sounds like it. Why use that word, sangfroid? Does he want to sound important or wise? It's their first meeting, is that his way of making a good first impression? It does seem out of place with his sparse and precise dialog.

Watts sits in his car for over an hour outside their new yellow house to talk to Frank. Frank's wife, Catherine, tells him that she "can handle imposition" but "what [she] can't handle is secrecy." Right from the get go, the seed for the secrecy of the Millennium Group has been planted for later use, whether intentional or not. It was inevitable, I assume, to change things up.

Frank says to Catherine that the men he helps catching make him make-believe that he is making the world a better place. Catherine says to Frank that "the world starts to seep in" and that he "can't stop it". Is there no escape from the darkness? Only refuges, like in the form of a yellow house. This mirrors what the Frenchman says before he dies, that Frank can't stop it…the approaching apocalypse.

I love the usage of that Nine Inch Nails song both in the scene where Frank is deciphering what the Frenchman is saying on the security camera footage and the enhanced version that he made for his Frenchman lecture for the homicide detectives. Frank rewinds and re-watches, there are loops and jump-cuts and the music follows suit. It's something Homicide: Life on the Street did do, another echo. And I love Frank's enhanced version of the tape, it's not that silly CSI music stripped clean for a clear dialog to be heard, which is impossible. It's all about frequencies you can block, and there's only so much you can do. And that's why I miss this in today's cop show, but I know they do this to expedite things; we only have so many minutes in the television hour.

For all his gifts and curses, Frank crosses paths with the Frenchman by pure accident. It's always the little things that can lead to the capture of serial killers, like an unpaid parking ticket for the Son of Sam serial killings. Frank spots the same word in a photograph that was carved on the empty coffin they found in the woods.

And that encounter leads to the chase sequence, which ends rather strangely in my mind.

The Frenchman jumps off the bridge off-screen, we see him hanging under the bridge. This has always looked odd to me, how did I manage to do that when he had no time to plan for this? And especially the position he's hanging there makes it all the more unrealistic to me. Chris Carter says in the commentary that this was a re-shoot, they did that shot twice. This apparently worked for him, but I wonder how the original shot looked like.

It's interesting seeing the politics of a high stakes murder investigation. The argument of following the only lead they have, some hairs that we know don't lead anywhere, or follow Frank Black and his gift. There's a palpable tension between everyone in the room, these guys are serious men with a serious job, to catch a crazy killer who "is confused about his sexuality".

There's one error, which I would be none the wiser if Chris Carter didn't point it out in the commentary. Frank says the Frenchman is "prophesizing" which should be "prophesying". But you still can find it listed on webster.com as it's a common mistake, I assume. Paul Dillon, the actor who portrayed the Frenchman pointed it to Chris Carter, but it was too late to change it. What, no looping and/or cut to the men listening to his lecture?

Frank tells Bletch about his gift, that he "become[s] the thing we fear the most" by becoming capability and horror. "What we know, we can become only in our heart of darkness". It sounds to me that everyone has that gift judging by his description of his cursed gift.

It's good that there's some tiny bit of humor in Millennium, a reminder of the cold hard truth of real detectives. They crack jokes at work like everyone else, under not so normal circumstances. When Bletch crosses the icy cold river he says to himself "it's a good thing [he] already got a family". It's funny each time…at least to me.

Bletch says to Frank in 18 years he hasn't "ever seen anything as terrifying" as what he saw that night when they found the guy in the coffin. Frank replies, "You ever see your kid lying on a bed in an emergency ward?" They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this applies to everything we see, but also horror and terror. This is the reason why some people think Borrowed Time or The Sound of Snow are much more effective than any other episode of Millennium with all its gory content and crazy killers.

Frank tells Bletch about Ed Cuffle, the last big case he did for the FBI before he retired. A nice circle, an Ouroboros if you will, is created between this episode and the last two episodes of Season 3 where Frank witnesses Cuffle's execution and gets a farewell Polaroid. Although, he is not responsible for the Polaroids he gets in this episode. It's just a nice callback at the end of the series, I've always felt.

Another thing which is off to me for this episode and which is rather convenient is the dispatch of the Frenchman. Bletch just happens to come down there at the right moment. It's not shown if Frank did write it all down what the guy on the phone said to him, about the blood tests coming from their own building. Or was it a lucky guess or one of those typical cop gut feelings or a hunch? I wonder if they had a line in the script to address this, maybe they did, maybe they didn't.

Enter Benny, the dog, Chris Carter's best casting job according to himself. And what a smile on Frank's face, I've never seen that face on Lance Henriksen before or again. You never know what you are going to get from Lance, but you know it's going to be good.

Frank gets those dreaded Polaroids again, that drove him to a mental breakdown causing him to retire from the FBI, as Catherine is on her way to a job interview which is presumably for that social worker job title we get a glimpse of a few episodes later in The Well-Worn Lock.

The Pilot episode will always be highly regarded in Millennium fandom, but it's too by the numbers for me to be close to a top 5 list…maybe on a top 10. Everything is well done, the actors, the music, the direction and the production design elevated the standard cop show routine that this looked like it was going be. But we all know, it didn't become a routine, otherwise we all wouldn't be here still talking about the show…Thirteen Years Later…(sort of).

***1/2 out of ****
